6/11/2025

As the utility industry faces growing pressure to improve efficiency, reduce strain on workers, and increase accountability, tools are evolving to meet the moment. Crimping tools—essential for making secure electrical connections in both overhead and underground power distribution—are no exception.

Milwaukee Tool’s latest lineup of powered crimpers reflects a broader shift in the industry: one where ergonomics, data-driven performance, and application-specific design are shaping the future of field work. We spoke with Troy Marks, Director of Product Marketing at Milwaukee Tool, to explore how these new solutions align with what today’s utility linemen need most—and what’s coming next.

Tool Selection is Getting Smarter and More Application-Specific

M18 18V 12-Ton Lithium-Ion Cordless FORCE LOGIC Inline Crimper with 2-Batteries, Charger Tool BagLinemen rely on powered crimpers to create consistent, high-strength connections in high-voltage environments. Typically, 6-ton crimpers are used for overhead work, while 12-ton crimpers are favored for underground applications. Milwaukee’s portfolio includes purpose-built options designed around these real-world demands.

Among them are:

Each offers application-specific benefits that simplify operation while boosting consistency and control.

“The differentiation between Milwaukee’s crimping solutions lies in their design and application-specific features,” says Marks. “Each tool is engineered to meet the unique challenges linemen face in different environments.”

Purpose-Built Features Reflect What Today’s Linemen Need Most

M18 FORCE LOGIC 6T Latched Linear Utility Crimper

Ideal for both overhead and underground work, this crimper features a 340-degree rotating latched head for easy alignment in tight or complex orientations. Predictive Force Intelligence (PFI) ensures full pressure is achieved every cycle—confirmed visually by a green LED.

“It offers the easiest way to make uniform crimps,” Marks explains. “That control in various orientations is crucial on the jobsite.”

Built for speed and durability, this tool includes a fully enclosed high-speed hydraulic system and a POWERSTATE™ Brushless Motor. It’s ergonomically designed for one-handed operation and features Predictive Force Monitoring (PFM) technology to verify crimp pressure in real time.

“This solution is also ONE-KEY™ compatible, giving users advanced tool management and tracking capabilities,” Marks notes.

M18 FORCE LOGIC 750 MCM Dieless Crimper

A standout for its Auto Distance Control technology, this dieless crimper senses when the tool contacts the connector and automatically applies optimal compression, regardless of wire size. Its 180-degree rotating head allows for greater flexibility in the field.

“You get up to 90 crimps per charge on a CP2.0 battery, making it efficient for long shifts,” says Marks.

Connectivity and Data are Reshaping Jobsite Expectations

All of Milwaukee’s powered crimpers are compatible with ONE-KEY™, a tool management platform that allows real-time crimp data storage, historical performance tracking, report generation, and even tool location monitoring.

This kind of connected functionality is becoming essential as utilities demand more jobsite documentation, preventive maintenance insights, and fleet-level oversight.

“Today’s linemen and fleet managers want more than just a tool—they want insight,” Marks says. “Being able to verify crimp pressure or pull historical performance helps validate work and reduce callbacks.”

Built for Real-World Conditions

These crimpers are designed with the jobsite in mind. Weather-protected electronics, sealed hydraulic systems, and compatibility with Milwaukee’s M18 REDLITHIUM™ Battery Packs ensure consistent performance in temperatures ranging from -4°F to 140°F.

“Whether it’s sleet, heat, or tight working conditions, these tools are built to withstand it,” Marks emphasizes.

What This Means for the Future of Utility Work

As experienced linemen retire and new generations enter the trade, tools must become easier to operate, more intuitive, and more connected. Milwaukee’s latest offerings show how manufacturers are responding—not just with more power, but with smarter design and data-centric solutions.

“Everything about these tools—from ergonomic design to digital tracking—is about helping linemen do the job faster, safer, and with greater confidence,” Marks says.

Tool Trends to Watch

  • App-based tool management and tracking
  • Crimp pressure verification
  • Ergonomic, one-handed operation
  • Dieless technology for greater versatility
  • Jobsite documentation and data reporting
  • Weather-resistant components for extreme environments

The Bottom Line

Crimping tools may seem like a small part of utility work, but they’re a critical link in delivering safe, reliable power. With newer technologies that streamline operation and integrate smart features, tools like those from Milwaukee aren’t just improving workflows—they’re shaping how utility jobsites will operate in the years to come.
